In early 2009, Mayor Richie Daley told the people of Chicago we would not be on the hook for the expenses of the 2016 Olympics. But then he went to Lausanne for an IOC meeting later in the year and he did a 180 admitting he would sign the usual IOC agreements putting Chicago on the hook. Fortunately there were non-Chicago 2016 committee and staff members in Lausanne, notably a trio of NoGamers who were able to present to the media the consequences of Daley's about face.
So, its 2012 and we have a new Mayor who wants Chicago to host the NATO/G-8 meeting from May 15-22, 2012. In 2011 he proposed temporary extraordinary security measures be enacted for enforcement during those events.
Back from a Hanukah vacation in South America where Rahm must have taken a short class in banana republic dictatorship, he now proposes that the changes be permanent except some changes in purchasing procedures for acquiring "goods, work or services" necessary to host the fiasco/event. Those can be temporary. Actually he says that he merely misspoke in 2011. He always wanted his proposed restrictive infringement of our rights to protest and the additional surveillance of the citizenry to continue after the event.
So, Chicagoans will get all of the security expense and restrictions that the 2016 Games we didn't want would have brought. But without the tourism and sports entertainment. Wow!
