"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing."

Welcome to The Year of Living Civically, my blog and website dedicated to civic engagement.
I'll be attending and writing about all kinds of civic meetings, events, protests and processes.
I'll be at meetings of legislative bodies, board meetings of a range of public commissions
and boards, and meetings of people concerned about their communities.
Wherever and however people are gathering to make decisions about the public's business,
I'll be there.

I love words so I love writing and talking.

Me, Rachel Goodstein
This is a smartphone photo of me as an official soapboxer at the Newberry Library Bughouse Square debates held July 2010. I'm delivering my oration/rant/diatribe entitled, "Twenty is Plenty: Reasons to Dethrone the Daley Dynasty." As soon as I am technically able to I will post the whole spiel.
I'm wearing one of my all time favorite T-shirts, VOX POP, voice of the people.
I bought it at the Bowery Poetry Cafe (NYC) a few years ago. But its from a cafe in Brooklyn that I read was closed by the taxman. The small print says, "BOOKS, COFFEE, DEMOCRACY". Three of my other favorite things!
